I selected this peice of artwork because I liked the detail, and the purpose of the painting, mother and child. The little details in the gold are my favoirite part of the picture, along with embroidering on the edges of the robes. This painting represents the Byzantine empire because the christanity in the Byzintine empire was very important in the every day life. People have been painting the Virgin and Child sense the begining of art. This one is Christ clinging to his mother, and in the other hand a scroll. The scroll contains Latin text that translates to "I am the way, the truth, and the light." The star on Virgin Mary's cloak shows her importance, the star of the sea. It was painted on white plaster and gone over with gold leaf. Most art like this originated in the Byzantine era.
